The Österreichische Gesellschaft Großtrappenschutz (ÖGG) was established in 2004 with approval from the conservation authorities of Lower Austria and Burgenland. Its role is to implement Great Bustard projects and to coordinate future conservation work at a national level.

Before its foundation, Great Bustard conservation in Austria was managed only by regional organisations—Grüne Welt (Westliches Weinviertel), Distelverein (Sandboden und Praterterrasse), and the Interessensgemeinschaft Großtrappenschutz Parndorfer Platte–Heideboden, as well as the cross-border Pannonic Society (PGG). While effective locally, none of these groups was equipped to carry out a large-scale conservation project, making the establishment of the ÖGG necessary.

The ÖGG’s executive committee and advisory board include representatives from the provincial governments of Lower Austria and Burgenland, the key regional conservation societies, and the Institute of Wildlife Biology and Game Management. All activities align with Natura 2000 conservation objectives and support Austria in meeting its obligations under the EU Birds Directive.
