A recent incident within the LIFE EUROBUSTARD project area marks the first documented case of a great bustard (Otis tarda) dying after colliding with overhead power lines in Romania.

This highlights a major threat to the species, as great bustards are highly vulnerable to collisions due to their size and limited flight manoeuvrability. The case occurred in the Salonta area (Bihor County), home to Romania’s last remaining population and a key project site.

The incident underlines the urgent need to reduce collision risks, including measures such as installing bird diverters or modifying dangerous power lines.
